Richard Forer is an author, human rights activist and public speaker. “I am the author of Breakthrough: Transforming Fear Into Compassion - A New Perspective on the Israel-Palestine Conflict, published in 2010, and Wake Up and Reclaim Your Humanity: Essays on the Tragedy of Israel-Palestine [2020]. The latter book was the winner of the New York City Big Book Award.

Both books describe the inner thought processes that lead normally decent people who ordinarily believe in justice to support indecency and injustice. Additionally, they are the only books that elucidate the roots of the Israel-Palestine tragedy in particular and of suffering in general. Those roots are psycho-spiritual in nature. By spiritual I am referring to the problem, or illusion, of "Identity."“

Wake Up and Reclaim Your Humanity: Essays on the Tragedy of Israel-Palestine [2020] tells the true story of a lifelong supporter of Israel who underwent a remarkable spiritual awakening in which he realized he was as much Muslim or Christian as Jew and as much Palestinian as Israeli or American. Existential fear and confusion, the hallmarks of separate identities, were transformed into compassion and clarity and an unequivocal vision of the roots of suffering spontaneously arose. Recognizing that endless conflict only leads to alienation from our true selves, this book encourages readers to look at the documented history of the Israel-Palestine tragedy and get in touch with how they view and interpret that history. It offers readers a path that leads to freedom from false beliefs, enemy images, and the illusion of identity to equal rights for all people and a just peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

Rich will help us understand the difference between anti-semitism and anti-Zionism.
He will share how he shifted from being a strong Zionist to his current stance of holding the bigger picture of reclaiming your humanity (which is foundational to transforming fear to compassion)?

What is Zionism? (courtesy of the Anti-Defamation League)
There are diverse views among Zionists about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, about how to promote peace, whether to support a two-state solution, and about approaches to Israeli settlements.  Being critical of Israeli policies is no more anti-Zionist than being critical of American policies is anti-American.

Zionism does not preclude support for Palestinian self-determination and statehood. For some Zionists, support for a two-state solution is the realization of self-determination for Jews and Palestinians alike.

*CPL Guest Mentor Sessions are a key feature of CPL Community Builder membership program. Intention of these sessions: close-in conversations about the role of Purposeful Leadership in these transformative times.

Consider becoming a CPL Community Builder to support the work of CPL (a for-benefit 501c3) and its vibrant community of purposeful leaders.

More about Richard Forer

Rich Forer YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/briana4845

Forer has spoken at many venues in the United States. His objective is to encourage people not to believe what their society has told them about Israel-Palestine but to do their own research. In this way, their confusion will be alleviated and they will have a far better grasp on the reality of the problem. In conjunction with his emphasis on self-education, he helps people discover how, primarily through indoctrination of all kinds, each of us creates our own suffering and then projects that suffering onto the world. This inner thought process is what provokes the attachment to holding onto false beliefs as well as ours and others' suffering. Once we understand this process, it becomes more likely that we can create peace for ourselves and for the world.

Forer has been interviewed on Press TV as well as a variety of radio shows. He is also a contributor to two other books on the Israel-Palestine problem. Everyday Convening: Noticing, Nurturing, and Normalizing Felt-Sensed and Spacious Listening

Thursday, June 13, 2024 | 9:00-11:00 AM Central | Zoom-based
Co-convened by Mary Elaine Kiener and
Cecily Victor

In this workshop, co-conveners Mary Elaine Kiener and Cecily Victor will invite an interactive exploration of how to bring the Art of Convening into the “real world” of everyday life.  In particular, this encompasses those circumstances and environments in which convening is not an explicitly shared cultural value and/or practice.

Mary Elaine and Cecily will briefly share instances from their own lived experiences and offer a few brief exercises to illustrate the power of pausing to invite freshness in conversations with others, create space for instances of “natural” felt-sensing to emerge and invite new possibilities that may arise from spacious listening.

"A melted drop in Antarctica ripples throughout the rest of the world"

A journey across both poles, After Antarctica directed by Tasha Van Zandt follows polar explorer Will Steger's life journey as an eyewitness to the greatest changes to the polar regions of our planet. In 1989, Steger led an international team of six scientists and explorers on the first coast-to-coast dogsled traverse of Antarctica. The ultimate mission of the expedition was to draw global attention to Antarctica’s changing climate and use the expedition as a tool to renew the Antarctic Treaty, which would protect the continent from mineral exploitation.

Even with his background in science and knowledge of the changing climate, Steger could never have expected what he would soon discover. This arduous expedition opened his eyes to the most pressing issue of our time and ultimately changed the course of his life forever.

Now, thirty years later, Steger heads out on the ice once again, this time to the opposite end of the Earth, recounting the life-changing journey that led him to where he is today. After Antarctica is a film about a legendary expedition unlike any other - not only were Steger and his team of renegade explorers the first to complete this historic feat, but due to the melting of the ice on their original route, they were also the last.

2 leadership themes emerged:

  1. What a small group can accomplish together. The Trans-Antartica expedition took 3 years to plan. The expedition’s goal was to draw worldwide attention to the perils the continent was facing and the impending threat of resolution of the Antarctic Treaty, limiting mineral exploitation. Will invited and worked with leaders from 5 countries, some that were “diplomatic enemies”—countries within the former Soviet Union, plus China Japan, and Britain—and work with leadership in these countries to reverse the treaty. “Our unified goal kept us singularly focused no matter the odds stacked against us.” - Will Steger

  2. The power of a wilderness environment to create the conditions for breakthrough thinking. And you know, obviously the film goes back and forth. “The entire expedition resembled a mobile Zen monastery where survival demanded a mindset of freedom and intuitive awareness. Our days followed a meditative rhythm and strict regimen, guided by simplicity that mandated the elimination of all unnecessary elements. While this might seem arduous on the surface, I discovered an incredible freedom of thought, a state unburdened by the noise of everyday thinking. Traveling in this peaceful state during long hours confined in tents or traversing the harsh polar plateau fostered inspiration and creativity.” -Will Steger

Servant leader of many deep learning experiences

Founder & Director, Deep Nature Journeys
LeCiel Foundation Holistic Visions, Global Peace Ambassador

Bud is a social and environmental entrepreneur. As Founder of Deep Nature Journeys offering Leadership Awareness Training, and Wilderness Solo experiences, Bud is a steadfast advocate for the principles of deep ecology. He believes that regenerative human behavior is the next essential step for humanity. Restorative principles and initiatives must replace the standard practices of industrial growth societies.  In his view, sustainability is inadequate to meet today's challenges. Sustainability maintains a base level of status quo.

“My desire is to have people truly and genuinely fall in love with source and the life force that animates all that is. I work to diminish the amount of separation that exists among human beings currently. The path that is to have people truly and genuinely fall in love with your source and the life force that animates all that is.”

People protect what they love.

It's time that we replaced our love of power. Money, bright and shiny objects and things. And stuff. And replace it with a love of life. And one another, self and one another.

"What was your 1st encounter with nature/the natural world?"
"How did your 1st encounter inform your life journey?"
"What makes your heart sing when you think about or are in the natural world?"
"When facing a challenging time, where do you find refuge? What is your sanctuary?" Many people would say, "in nature."

We will explore CPL operating principles of Open Mind - Open Heart - Open Will.

Inner security vs national security

Bud is part of a global community of peace ambassadors through a LeCiel Foundation Holistic Visions cohort.
Every year, Holistic Visions brings together 144 thought leaders, creatives, and subject matter experts from over 40 countries, who together, are addressing the fundamental tenets of a more balanced and ecologically-minded society.

From Bud:

I am a leadership development trainer, wilderness guide (www.deepnaturejourneys.com), change agent and cause based connector of extraordinary people and projects.

My extensive experience in presence & awareness training, as well as my years as a wilderness guide continues to inform my passionate advocacy for ecological, social and cultural renewal.

I know that a deep commitment to the highest standards of quality and integrity are the keys to creating excellence. Our shared positive vision of the world we dream as possible is the antidote for the well informed futility syndrome that leads to resignation and despair.

As a member of the top management team for John Denver's Windstar Foundation, I learned that all of humanity shares the same core values: caring for the well-being of the whole is the key to success in business and communities.

My career in leadership development, designing innovative sales and marketing strategies, demonstrating measurable results and enthusiasm for new possibilities continues to inspire me forward into greater collaborations, innovations and achievements.

Creating Spaces of Safety for Connection and Growth

Thursday, March 28, 2024 | 9:00-11:00 AM Central | Zoom-based
Co-convened by Mary Elaine Kiener and
Stephanie Glaros

As conveners, we learn to create physical and energetic fields that bring a sense of aliveness along with agreed-upon terms of agreement that foster a sense of safety and belonging for our time together.

Yet, many of us still feel a bit puzzled and self-conscious about creating containers of safety (Aspect 5 of the AoC Wheel)--either in personal or professional settings.

We cherish the safety, comfort and support that surrounds us within our beloved communities.  However, we often become much less confident in situations that feel uncomfortable--either within ourselves or with each other--as so often happens as we approach the "learning edge" of our individual and/or communal lives.  For learning--as with any change--starts from a place of finding ourselves uncomfortable with the status quo.

In this workshop, co-conveners Mary Elaine Kiener and Stephanie Glaros will invite your individual and collective embodied wisdom as we Honor, Open and Widen into "how" we (as artful conveners) can co-create containers of safety for connection AND growth.

What we'll explore together:

  • A felt sense of "safety and connection" as conveners

  • The differences between "uncomfortable" and "unsafe"

  • Artful convening through discomfort to foster new learning and growth

Celebrating 4 years of Essential Conversations with a special session with Margaret Wheatley for a deep dive into her new book

Margaret Wheatley, author, Leadership and the New Science, Turning to One Another, Who Do We Choose To Be?, Restoring Sanity, The Warrior’s Songline, and more.

Restoring Sanity: Practices to Awaken Generosity, Creativity, and Kindness in Ourselves and Our Organizations

What Would It Be Like to Restore Sanity? What would it be like to work together again in creative and generous ways? What would it be like to be curious about who you’re with rather than judging or fearing them? What would it be like to engage together in exploring possibilities rather than withdrawing in conflict or disagreement? What would it be like to be working well together?

Meg is a best-selling author of many books that have guided CPL’s evolution, including Turning to One Another and, more recently, Who Do We Choose to Be. Meg offers us, as brave leaders and change agents, the tools to create work conditions that foster generosity, creativity, and kindness in a world of tumultuous and irreversible changes.

From fifty years of working with leaders on all continents and at all levels, Meg feels confident to say that leadership has never been more difficult. No matter our past success as caring and empowering leaders, we now face dynamics beyond our control intensifying at exponential speed.

The perfect storm is here with the coalescence of climate and human-created catastrophes, greed, and fear. People retreat in self-protection and communities have fractured. As leaders dedicated to serving the causes and people we treasure, what are we to do?

Meg's answer is that we need to restore sanity by awakening the human spirit. To achieve this, we must undertake the most challenging and meaningful work of our leader lives: Creating Islands of Sanity, places of possibility and sanctuary.

Sane leadership is the unshakable confidence that people can be generous, creative, and kind. The leader's role is to create the conditions for these innate capacities to manifest in meaningful work. This role requires both inner and outer work. Wheatley provides detailed practices for developing personal and group capacities to respond wisely and well to the challenges of this tumultuous time. Practices are organized around five major questions:

  • How do we create and sustain an Island of Sanity?

  • How do we shift from reactivity to responsiveness?

  • What are the practices to awaken people's generosity, creativity, and kindness?

  • What do we do when something goes wrong?

  • What do we do when the road gets hard?

Yes, leadership is increasingly difficult. And it can be noble work if we choose to be Warriors for the Human Spirit, using our power and influence to create places of possibility and sanctuary. There is no more rewarding and joyful work than awakening people's generosity, creativity, and kindness.

MARGARET (MEG) WHEATLEY, Ed.D.

Since 1966, Margaret Wheatley has worked globally in many different roles: a speaker, teacher, community worker, consultant, advisor, formal leader. From these deep and varied experiences, she has developed the unshakable conviction that leaders must learn how to evoke people’s inherent generosity, creativity, and need for community. As this world tears us apart, sane leadership on behalf of the human spirit is the only way forward.

  • She is a best-selling author of nine books, from the classic Leadership and the New Science in 1992 and Who Do We Choose To Be? Facing Reality, Claiming Leadership, Restoring Sanity in June 2017. Her latest work is The Warrior’s Songline, a multi-sensory experience of the journey Warriors for the Human Spirit take to become the presence of insight and compassion–no matter what is going on around them. This new form melds together voice and sound creating an evocative and transcendent listening experience.
