SPIRITUAL DIRECTION, ALLY TO LEADERS

TERRY CHAPMAN

D.min., CCL

“Spiritual direction or contemplative coaching explores a deeper relationship with the spiritual aspect of being human. Simply put, spiritual direction is helping people tell their sacred stories everyday.”

  • In the thirty years I have companioned people on the Journey, as a pastor (Presbyterian Church, USA), friend, colleague and Spiritual Director I have discovered what truly makes my heart sing: creating and nurturing opportunities for people to discover and express stories of how they experience the Divine (and at times how they don't!). It is a great privilege and joy to witness the transformation that happens when people discover that God is an active presence in their lives and begin to form language that describes the experience of God.

Because I believe that all lasting change is linguistic, embedded in story, I am passionate about engaging in conversations that explore life below the surface. It is the authentic conversations that take place with friends around the kitchen table, the lunch room at work or school, or in the context of spiritual direction, that each person can bear witness in word and deed to God’s steadfast love and faithfulness.

  • Though Spiritual Direction is a conversation exploring the movements of “Spirit, The Divine or Ultimate Reality” it is available for people of any faith tradition or those who have none. For more information about Spiritual Direction visit Spiritual Directors International.

  • “SD sessions with Terry have been a lifeline and a true compass for my spiritual life. Our conversations flow like waves of new questions and insights which. They have not only helped me deepen my relationship with God but also helped me become a better human being through the gift of self-awareness delivered in space of compassion. I highly recommend Terry for anyone seeking to dive deep into the depths of their soul to find the divine spark within” - E.K.

“To be human is to need feedback, a mirror - from others I encounter every day and myself. The feedback from others can be too much to handle sometimes, too painful, too full of sorrow. While the feedback from within can be full of shame. Spiritual direction offered by Terry Chapman, along with my intention and attention, has helped me to practice insight and compassion. The ability to hold something painful, joyful and everything in between, with a stance of jovial curiosity, is powerful; like a child that holds a puppy in their lap for the first time or chases after a firefly in a summer evening. Even just for a split second, the ability to have a witnessing stance of myself and how I react to life events is the difference between transmitting my pain or transforming it. Spiritual direction has helped to ground me and deepened my awareness to Spirit and that I have all I need for the experiences of this journey, called life.” - S.E.

“Terry Chapman is a deep pool of clear water, providing a gratifying drink to thirsty souls. We were first colleagues in ministry, but in recent years as my Spiritual Director, Terry has become an all-important cairn to guide my spiritual journey. He is a superlative listener who is acutely attentive to the movements of the Spirit. He is able to reflect back to me broad themes as well as subtle nuances that direct my wanderings with wisdom and empathy. He draws readily on strong theological underpinnings and a vast repertoire of poetry, mystic writings and literature. Inevitably, his guidance provides clarity, comfort, and compassion, and I leave each session feeling strengthened and encouraged.” - M.M.
