VIVIAN JENKINS NELSEN

Senior Fellow, Social Psych, Social Work, DEIJ

“My goal is to build the strengths of the organizations I serve. I help clients solve problems, learn from mistakes, and avoid future failures. I’m dedicated to my client’s success.”

  • Nelsen trained in leadership at Harvard University in the Bush Fellows Program. Her coaching is grounded in coursework in industrial psychology in the areas of consulting and coaching; graduate work in counseling and social psychology, in addition to teaching counseling and social work.

Nelsen has an extensive background in cross-cultural communication and conflict resolution and has authored articles and books on the subject. Her latest publications are handbooks on group and individual diversity conflict reflection and resolution. She has taught intercultural conflict resolution in seminars or classes for the Minnesota Legislature, corporations, hospitals, universities, community and immigrant groups, to name a few.

Vivian helps teams, especially diverse leadership teams, work more effectively. Her experience coaching leadership teams began in academia and spread to Fortune 500 companies. She coaches senior leadership teams in both the public and private sectors.

  • The coaching process is tailored to quickly meet the needs of each individual client. Coaching components include:

    • assessment

    • goal setting

    • planning

    • skill development

    • mediation

    • evaluation

    • follow-up

Coaching clients are provided insights, tools, information and feedback to enable them to overcome the challenges that can prevent them from achieving their full professional potential. Clients can face subtle barriers to success, and some are isolated. Together she and the client examine and contextualize emerging issues, opportunities, and initiate a plan of action. They analyze power, and how to translate it into substantive leaderships. Clients learn how to build trust for meaningful relationships.
